WRITING TIPS FOR FINAL EXAM

Just a few reminders

  • Write number in words, except in dates (May 25th, 2003), time (3 o'clock) age (She was 11 years old) but not " 5 minutes later" _____ Five minutes later...

  • Write short sentences not a sentence of 5 lines without any fullstops.

  • Separate your sentences with fullstops, NOT with commas. E.g. The family went to the countryside for a picnic, They took sandwiches and fruit for lunch, They went by car, It was a beautiful day.

BUT   The family went to the countryside for a picnic. They took sandwiches and fruit for lunch. They went             by car. It was a beautiful day.

  • Try not to start a sentence with "also" you can use "In addition".

  • Be careful with your past tenses.

  • Try using the past perfect tense.

  • Include showing words or sentences by using adjectives, similes

  • Include fantasy elements if appropriate.

  • Avoid closing your story with "They lived happily ever after".

  • Make sure who you are talking about.

  • If one paragraph is too long, you can split it in more paragraphs.

  • Give your story a good title

  • Remember to make the introduction "catchy" so as to attract the reader's attention.

  • Your teacher will not be the only reader, everybody has to understand what you are writing.

  • Clear, legible handwriting.

ALL THE BEST!!!!!  Re read your story once it is finished!!!!
